URBANA’S ECO-COMMUNITY

DOWNTOWN URBANA, ILLINOIS

This project is located in downtown Urbana, Illinois, bounded by Race St on the east side, Main St on the south side, residential homes on the west side, while Boneyard Creek runs through the site. The concept models model the site in 3 different aspects. ‘Absorb’ represents the ecological systems and how the natural elements and the creek interact with each other. ‘Connect’ focuses on human circulation and how people move in and out of the site, and how they gather and connect with each other. ‘Placid’ models a simple day when nothing much is going on. It is a peaceful day and people are simply going about their day and passing through.

The design plan focuses on stormwater management through a rain garden, permeable pavers, and a bioswale. The slope and grade of the site slopes towards the north, so naturally,

excess water from the creek will flow into the rain

garden.

Through the pollinator gardens, native species

and biodiversity will increase on the site and in

the surrounding vicinity.

The pollinator gardens also act as a site for UIUC

clubs, such as the Beekeeping Club and the Horticulture Cub. The clubs can use the site to tend, take care, and plant plants. During bloom times, they can partner up with the Urbana Park

District and have flower and seed sales.
